A few days ago, the Tulane Green Wave gained a commitment from St. Charles Catholic High School (Laplace, LA) 2027 defensive back James Tyson. At 6’0, 180 pounds, the rising recruit recently picked up an offer from the Green Wave and decided to announce that he was staying close to home.

Tyson has risen up the recruiting ranks and is emerging as one of the top upcoming prospects to watch out for in Louisiana with offers already from the likes of Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Cornell, and Nicholls. Still, there is no other team that he has built a relationship more than with the Green Wave.
“The conversations I’ve had with the coaches are very real. It doesn’t feel fake or like they’re just talking to recruit me. It feels like a genuine connection. I believe Tulane sees me as a cornerback who can play the inside or outside at a very high level, especially in the man schemes that they run a lot in their defense.”

Tyson has emerged on the scene late since he has only taken sports seriously since his sophomore year, but he has quickly showed what kind of athlete he truly is. In fact, it was at our Gridiron Football Elite Camp last offseason at Lamar Dixon Expo Center that he put on one of the more impressive athletic displays that our camp series has ever had. There, he posted a 4.45/40, a 4.12 shuttle, and a camp record 10’7 broad jump. It was at the camp where Tyson admitted has gained his confidence as a football player.
“The Gridiron camp is actually what fired up my football career. It built a confidence in me that’s helped me get to where I am today and ultimately, I thank Gridiron Football for the camp experience because I don’t think I’d be where I am today without it.”

Jumping to this offseason, the St. Charles Catholic athletic phenom has proven to be one of the fastest players in the state as he also is a state bronze medalist for the 100-meter dash with a blistering 10.67 time. It his blazing speed and quickness that not only makes him a lockdown corner, but it gives him the recovering speed to easily make up ground.
“Of course, the obvious answer would be my speed. However, my coverage ability is easily the best strength of my life.”

With his impressive physical measurables and a high ceiling, Tyson is eager to continue improving on his craft.
“I’ve worked on my all-around craft, which includes my football skill set as well as my athletic skill. Capitalizing on both of those helps me prepare for my senior season which the ultimate goal is to win one last championship with my guys.”

Championships are the standard at St. Charles Catholic as the Comets have won three state championships in five years under head coach Wayne Stein including last year. Along with being super athletic, Tyson has also gained other valuable attributes that he can help bring championships to other teams.
“We are a program based strictly on toughness. We rarely get guys that are these 6’2, 200 pound 4.3/30 prototypes. St. Charles Catholic is known for having guys that at any other program would be considered undersized, but at SCC, size isn’t a variable. What really matters in our play is our toughness and heart and that’s what has gotten us to where we are today.”

With his commitment to Tulane, the Comets’ speedy defensive back is now focused on trying to add another state championship, but he also knows that he has another opportunity to represent the Comets in this year’s Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game as he has been invited to participate at the end of the season.
“To have a chance to represent the Comets means a lot to me. I love what Gridiron is building and to be invited to take part in this is truly a blessing!”
