One of the top cornerbacks in South Louisiana is East Ascension High School (Gonzales, LA) defensive back Jayd’n Washington. At 6’0, 170 pounds, Washington is a lockdown defender that can shut down a wide receiver and put him on an island. His athleticism, ability to move his hips, and track the football make him a special defensive back.

Those qualities are what McNeese State loved when looking at Washington. In late June, Washington committed to the Cowboys. Going to the game day visits and seeing himself in the Blue and Gold was too good to pass up.
“A big part that played in me committing to McNeese State is the coaching staff. They made me feel very welcomed and at home the minute I stepped on their campus and just the environment of the school. It just feels like home.”

Before he goes out to McNeese State, he will get used to wearing those same colors as he will be playing for East Ascension his senior season after previously playing at Denham Springs. It is actually East Ascension head coach Brock Matherne that played a big role in Washington’s commitment.
“The process at East Ascension has been amazing. The first day there, the coaches have shown nothing but love and Coach Matherne has played a big part in my commitment to McNeese State even though I’ve only been with him for seven months.”

Last season, Washington had 45 tackles, 12 PBUs, 2 interceptions, and a sack for the Yellow Jackets. Now, he will get the opportunity to play against his former team on October 30th this year.
“It will definitely be a good game. I will be able to play against my friends and former teammates and I am just ready to see them on the field.”

Not only is a change of scenery new for Washington, but he is also going through a position change. After playing primarily cornerback in the past, his focus will now be at safety because of his ability to tackle in the open field and be a ball magnet.
“Just getting better at the safety position is what I am focused on since it is my first season playing it. I am also working on just sharpening my technique to get ready for the next level.”

A player that Washington looks up to happens to be a safety in Caleb Downs. Watching the former Alabama/Ohio State and current Dallas Cowboy has helped him in his transition.
“I definitely look up to Caleb Downs because just the way he approaches the game and his attitude towards it. it just motivates me to want to be better and just somewhat take some of the things he does and add it to my game.”

Over the years, Washington has credited his rise and his improvement as a player to the Gridiron Football Elite Camps and what he has learned from those offseason camps.
“The Gridiron camps definitely taught me things that I have bought back with me to the team and has made me better.”

Washington was named one of our Top 30 Elite Camp Top Performers this offseason and because of that, earned an official invitation to play in the 2026 Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game at the end of the season.
“The bowl game just gives me one last opportunity to play at the high school level with a few of my friends and peers and I am definitely looking forward to it.”

Jaydn’n Washington is excited to showcase his skills not only for the Spartans, but when he gets to play for the McNeese State Cowboys.
“They should be excited because I am going to bring energy and just make plays all across the field and just be entertaining to watch on the field.”
