After a short week to prepare for the SWAC opener, the Southern Jaguars were more than ready to take on the Mississippi Valley Delta Devils. To say that the Jaguars bounced back from last week’s defeat, would be considered a major understatement. The Jaguars looked like a totally different team after they could not get anything going against La Tech less than a week ago. Everything was clicking for the boys in blue and gold: the offense, defense, and special teams. Southern was able to tally 50 points while holding the Delta Devils to a meager 13 points.
Statistically speaking it was the Willie Quinn Show. Wide receiver, kick returner, and sometimes quarterback Quinn, was all over the football field Thursday night. There is a popular Hip-hop song titled “All We Do Is Win,” which could be certainly changed to “All We Do Is Quinn.” The Jaguars most electrifying player scored on a 39-yard punt return, then passed for an 89-yard touchdown, and capped off his scoring for the night with a 90-yard kick-off return for a touchdown. Other Jaguar players who made their presence felt included running back Lenard Tillery with 91-yards rushing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Austin Howard was 10/14 for 150 yards and one touchdown pass while Wide Receiver Randall Menard had three catches for 100-yards and a touchdown. Also, the defense was anchored by linebacker Kentavious Preston who had 11 tackles with three for a loss. Another positive was that the Jaguars collected three more interceptions. The Jaguars scored in every quarter except the fourth, which was when Coach Odums inserted many of his reserve players.
Now, just as the Jaguars put the La Tech game in the rearview mirror, they must put the Mississippi Valley State’s game behind them also. Next on the slate for the Southern Jaguars are the Jackson State Tigers. It will be this season’s home opener for the Southern Football team. The stadium should be packed with fans and the contest will be power-packed as well. The Jaguars are poised and ready to build on the victory over the Delta Devils and carry that momentum as they seek a win over JSU.
