Known for producing great running backs such as Eddie Fuller, Cecil Collins, Michael Ford, and most recently, Xavier Ford, the Leesville Wampus Cats have been known to beat opponents on the ground, but in 2026, the team’s approach may be through the air as they return one of the top quarterbacks in the state of Louisiana in Antrel Broom.
“I’d say my biggest strengths are my leadership, football IQ, and ability to stay calm under pressure. I take pride in making good decisions, reading defenses, and putting my teammates in the best position to succeed. I’m always looking to improve my game.”

After starting for the first time his sophomore year accounting for 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns, Broom broke out even more his junior year as he finished last season as one of the top quarterbacks in the area throwing for 2,144 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for 200 more yards and six rushing touchdowns. He also held a school record last season for the longest touchdown in program history of 99 yards.
“I’ve improved the most mentally. I’ve learned how to read defenses better, make quicker decisions, and staying calm under pressure. Physically, I’ve worked hard on my footwork, accuracy, and consistency, but I think my growth as a leader made the biggest difference.”

Broom is trying to carry some of that momentum especially in the second half of last year in which the Wampus Cats won five of their last six games.
“I’ve been working on becoming a more complete quarterback. I’ve focused on my footwork, getting the ball out quicker, and improving my accuracy. I’ve also been working on my leadership and communication.”

It is also the sport of basketball that has helped Broom in his development as a quarterback.
“Playing basketball has made me a better quarterback because it helps me with my footwork, movement in the pocket, and ability to stay composed when things breakdown. It also improved my decision making. I think competing in two sports has made me a better overall athlete.”

This offseason, Broom has showed all the areas that he has worked on and was one of our top performers for our Gridiron Football Elite Camp Series at Rosepine High School earlier this spring.
“I thought the camp was a great experience. Being coached by your staff and competing against other quarterbacks really challenged me. One thing that stuck with me was how important consistent footwork is to staying accurate.”

It was also at the camp where Broom received an invitation to play in the 2026 Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game at the end of the season at Louisiana Christian University in Pineville, Louisiana.
“It’s a huge honor. It gives me one more opportunity to represent Leesville and the people who’ve supported me throughout my career. I’m grateful for everything this program has done for me, and being able to wear that jersey one last time at the bowl game means a lot. I want to finish my high school career the right way and represent my school with pride.”

Until then, the Leesville veteran signal caller has some unfinished business to do as he looks to lead the Wampus Cats to even more success in 2026.
“My biggest goal is to help lead my team to a successful season and compete for a district championship and a deep playoff run. Also, put together a season that shows college coaches I’m ready to compete at the next level and finally, more than anything, I want to leave a legacy at LHS.”

What is shocking is that a quarterback that is 6’4, 195 pounds, accurate, has excellent touch on the deep ball, great pocket poise, the ability to beat defenses as a runner, and has a 3.1 GPA in the classroom has yet to receive any offers. However, he believes that it won’t take long for offers to come his way.
“I haven’t received an official offer yet, but I’ve had interest from several programs and have been building relationships with coaches. I’m trusting the process and letting my work and senior season speak for itself.”
“I’m looking for the right fit. I want coaches who are invested in developing me, a strong team culture, an opportunity to compete, and a school where I can get a great education while preparing for life after football.”

While Broom gets ready for his senior season, he wants to recognize all that have helped him put in the position that he is in today.
“My mom pushes me every day and she doesn’t let me settle. Family has helped me develop my work ethic, confidence, and competitive mindset. Having that support and competition at home makes me better on and off the field.”
“My coaches, teammates, and the community have supported me throughout my career. It’s a program that expects you to work hard and be a leader. I’m proud to wear the Wampus Cat jersey and represent this school every Friday night.”

Antrel Broom is excited and proud to represent the Wampus Cats one last time this season, but at the same time, he is just as excited to bring that same feeling to a college campus soon.
“I would tell college coaches that if they recruit me, they’re getting more than just a quarterback. They’re getting someone who’s going to lead, compete every day and work for everything he earns. I don’t run from challenges and I love being coached because I know I can always get better. My goal is to make the people around me better and help build a winning culture wherever I go.”
