The Denham Springs Yellowjackets defeated the Woodlawn Panthers 73–54 Thursday night in a high-scoring matchup filled with explosive plays, turnovers and constant momentum shifts.
Denham Springs established control early when No. 25, Cameron Moore, recovered a fumble by the Panthers, setting up an explosive touchdown run by No. 4, Tanner Koerner. The Yellowjackets capitalized on another Panthers fumble shortly afterward, extending their lead to 14–0.
Woodlawn answered when Derrius Jackson reached the end zone, cutting the deficit to seven. However, Denham Springs responded immediately with an explosive kickoff return by Koerner, followed by a touchdown by No. 11, Jeremy Williams. The Yellowjackets closed out the first quarter leading 21–7.
The Panthers came out fighting in the second quarter. Quarterback Ricky Mitchel had a successful throw to the end zone, bringing Woodlawn within seven points with 11:54 remaining in the half.
Denham Springs quarterback Devin Kinchen quickly answered, connecting with Williams for a touchdown to extend the lead to 28–14. The Yellowjackets’ defense then delivered a major momentum-changing play when No. 27, Jackson Golmond, intercepted a Woodlawn pass and returned it for a touchdown, pushing the score to 35–14.
Despite trailing by three touchdowns, Woodlawn refused to back down. A deep reception by Jordan Knox helped set up another Panthers touchdown, cutting the deficit to 35–21.
Denham Springs responded once again, taking advantage of a roughing-the-passer penalty before Koerner found the end zone for another touchdown. The successful extra point gave the Yellowjackets a 42–21 advantage with 6:49 remaining before halftime.
Woodlawn continued battling behind Mitchell’s passing attack. He connected with Jeremy Williams for a touchdown before the Panthers’ defense intercepted a Denham Springs pass, giving their offense another opportunity.
With just 17 seconds remaining in the half, Mitchell found Omar Morehouse for a touchdown. Although the extra point was unsuccessful, Woodlawn had cut the Yellowjackets’ lead to 42–34 heading into halftime.
The second half remained an offensive battle, with both teams continuing to add points to the scoreboard. Denham Springs scored another 31 points, while Woodlawn added 20. The Yellowjackets gradually extended their advantage, preventing the Panthers from completing their comeback.
Denham Springs ultimately secured the 73–54 victory, improving to 2–1 on the season, while Woodlawn fell to 1–2.
The Yellowjackets’ ability to capitalize on turnovers and consistently answer Woodlawn’s scoring drives proved crucial. Despite the loss, the Panthers showed resilience, repeatedly fighting back from large deficits in a game that featured an incredible 127 combined points.
