Oklahoma State pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the young college football season Saturday, defeating No. 6 Oregon 39-31 at Boone Pickens Stadium.
The Cowboys entered the matchup as significant underdogs and were coming off a 24-point loss to Tulsa. Instead, Oklahoma State produced its best performance of the season, ending a 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker led the upset, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards and another touchdown. His 10-yard rushing touchdown with just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter gave Oklahoma State a 36-30 lead.
Oregon briefly tied the game early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Dante Moore connected with Evan Stewart for a 38-yard touchdown. The Ducks, however, could not regain control.
Oklahoma State’s offense consistently moved the ball, finishing with 554 total yards compared with Oregon’s 281. Running back Caleb Hawkins added 110 rushing yards and a touchdown, while wide receiver Wyatt Young caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Oregon quarterback Dante Moore completed only 14 of 29 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks also lost a critical fumble late in the fourth quarter while attempting to mount a comeback.
The victory marked Oklahoma State’s first win over a ranked opponent under head coach Eric Morris and avenged last season’s 69-3 loss to Oregon.
