Week 1 featured dominant performances from Ohio State, Georgia and Miami, but nobody made a louder statement than LSU. These rankings consider opening-week performance, opponent quality, roster strength and championship potential rather than simply copying the national polls.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes
Ohio State looked every bit like the nation’s top team in its 56-3 demolition of Ball State. Julian Sayin threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while Jeremiah Smith collected 151 yards and two scores before the starters exited. The Buckeyes remain No. 1, but a trip to Texas will give them their first major test.
2. LSU Tigers
No team improved its stock more than LSU, which embarrassed Clemson 51-10 in Lane Kiffin’s debut. Sam Leavitt produced 343 total yards and three touchdowns, but the defense stole the show by holding Clemson to 74 meaningful yards before its final possession and stopping the visiting Tigers on all 12 third downs. LSU generated 644 total yards and delivered the weekend’s most impressive victory.
3. Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia overwhelmed Tennessee State 63-3 and scored touchdowns on its first five possessions. Gunner Stockton completed 15 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns, while the Bulldogs finished with 660 yards of offense and surrendered only 109. It was complete domination against an overmatched opponent.
4. Miami Hurricanes
Darian Mensah could not have produced a much better Miami debut. The Duke transfer completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-6 road victory over Stanford. Malachi Toney added a school-record 234 receiving yards and three touchdowns as Miami immediately established itself as the ACC favorite.
5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame gradually imposed its will during a 41-13 victory over Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. CJ Carr threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns, while Aneyas Williams added 90 rushing yards and two scores. The Fighting Irish demonstrated the physicality and depth necessary to contend for a national championship.
6. Texas Longhorns
Arch Manning threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns as Texas crushed Texas State 59-7. The Longhorns were dominant on both sides of the football, although Manning’s red-zone interception showed there is still room for improvement. Texas can make a massive statement when Ohio State visits Austin.
7. Indiana Hoosiers
The defending national champions opened their title defense with a convincing 52-16 victory over North Texas. Josh Hoover threw four touchdown passes in his Indiana debut, including a scoring strike on his first attempt. However, allowing North Texas to finish with 367 yards gives Curt Cignetti’s defense something to address.
8. Oregon Ducks
Oregon survived a tough challenge from Boise State, winning 34-27 after entering the fourth quarter tied. Dante Moore threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 62-yard strike to Dakorien Moore. The Ducks remain a championship contender, but their defense was tested more than expected.
9. Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss earned one of Week 1’s best victories by defeating Louisville 41-38 on Lucas Carneiro’s 48-yard field goal as time expired. Trinidad Chambliss accounted for 396 total yards and four touchdowns, while Deuce Alexander produced 159 receiving yards and two scores. The Rebels showed that their explosive offense remains dangerous, but need to sure up their defense that had its hands full with Louisville’s offense in the second half.
10. Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M completely suffocated Missouri State in a 50-0 victory. The Aggies allowed only 67 yards and four first downs while possessing the football for more than 43 minutes. Marcel Reed added 233 passing yards and two touchdowns during an efficient performance.
11. Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma’s defense lived up to its preseason hype by shutting out UTEP 51-0. The Sooners allowed only 198 yards and held the Miners to two third-down conversions. John Mateer threw three touchdown passes, while Isaiah Sategna III provided another score on an 88-yard punt return.
12. Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama handled East Carolina 48-10 and delivered a balanced performance in Kalen DeBoer’s latest season opener and in quarterback Keelon Russell’s first start. The Crimson Tide controlled the line of scrimmage, created explosive plays and never allowed the Pirates to threaten. A road game at Kentucky should reveal more about this team.
13. Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech took care of Abilene Christian and displayed the offensive firepower expected from one of the Big 12 favorites. The Red Raiders have the talent and financial investment to reach the College Football Playoff, but they will eventually need to prove themselves against stronger competition.
14. USC Trojans
USC improved to 2-0 after opening with victories over San José State and Fresno State. Jayden Maiava has looked comfortable directing Lincoln Riley’s offense, including 286 passing yards and three total touchdowns in the opener. The Trojans’ ceiling will once again be determined by their defense.
15. BYU Cougars
BYU dominated Utah Tech 63-7 behind 308 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Bear Bachmeier threw for 198 yards and three scores, while the defense forced four turnovers. The Cougars looked like one of the most complete teams in the Big 12.
16. Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State blanked Marshall 45-0 in an impressive debut for quarterback Rocco Becht. The Iowa State transfer threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns, while the Nittany Lions held Marshall to 147 yards and a 1-of-11 conversion rate on third down. That defensive performance moved Penn State back into the national conversation.
17. Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee rolled past Furman 56-9 in freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon’s highly anticipated debut. The Volunteers’ speed and offensive depth were obvious, but Georgia Tech will present a considerably tougher challenge. Brandon’s development will determine whether Tennessee can climb into the SEC’s top tier.
18. Utah Utes
Utah physically overwhelmed Idaho 66-14, rushing for 364 yards and finishing with 633 total yards. Devon Dampier completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns before leaving early in the second half. The Utes looked healthy, deep and ready to compete for the Big 12 championship.
19. Washington Huskies
Washington defeated Washington State 24-10 in the Apple Cup after keeping the Cougars scoreless through three quarters. Demond Williams Jr. accumulated 329 total yards and two touchdowns, while Jayden Limar’s late scoring run secured the victory. Twelve penalties remain a major concern for the Huskies.
20. SMU Mustangs
SMU escaped Florida State with a 27-24 road victory despite committing four turnovers. Kevin Jennings threw for 430 yards and three touchdowns but was also intercepted twice. Winning under chaotic circumstances was impressive, but the Mustangs must protect the football against better opponents.
21. Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa’s offense made an unexpected statement during a 40-0 victory over Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes outrushed the Huskies 289-7, with Kamari Moulton producing 183 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. If Iowa pairs that rushing attack with its usual defense, the Hawkeyes could become a Big Ten factor.
22. Missouri Tigers
Missouri jumped on Arkansas-Pine Bluff early and cruised to a 54-14 victory. Austin Simmons completed 17 of 19 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers built a 40-0 halftime lead. Missouri’s upcoming rivalry matchup with Kansas will provide a better measuring stick.
23. Louisville Cardinals
Louisville is the only team in these rankings with a loss, but the Cardinals deserve credit for pushing Ole Miss to the final play in a 41-38 thriller. Ohio State transfer Lincoln Kienholz produced 376 total yards and three touchdowns in his first start. Louisville still looks capable of competing near the top of the ACC.
24. Houston Cougars
Houston survived a tougher-than-expected test from Oregon State, pulling away for a 33-20 victory. Conner Weigman threw for 305 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, including the late rushing score that sealed the game. The Cougars have talent, but their inability to put Oregon State away earlier keeps them near the bottom.
25. Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia earns the final position after dominating NC State 34-8 in an ACC opener in Week 0. The Cavaliers rushed for 258 yards, held the Wolfpack to 168 total yards and controlled the game from start to finish. It was one of the most surprising and complete performances of opening weekend.
